Notes on Umeda Tomohiro’s KaigiOnRails 2025 talk - Range on Rails: How PostgreSQL Multirange Simplifies Complex Booking Logic

In July I spent some time digging through past KaigiOnRails schedules while working on a CFP application. I found this talk by Umeda Tomohiro of Rizap Technologies. His talk focused on how to build a reservation system without fixed-length time slots. I was interested in understanding the approach as I’d seen the same problem solved differently by colleagues.

Now that the conference videos are up, I thought I would continue sharing my thoughts and notes from the day.

Another talk I really enjoyed was Maria Yudina’s talk comparing screenwriting and storytelling with codebase maintenance.

Maria gave a major spoiler warning for the Sixth Sense at the start of the talk. Even after that there were some quite funny protests on the day. Something to be aware of as this blog post will basically be my notes from the talk.

My work sent a healthy contingent down for Brighton Ruby this year. First up after the keynote was the talk I was most looking forward to. You’ll appreciate why if you look at the titles on my technical talks page. It was a talk about how to use flamegraphs to find performance problems.
